The Powder Hounds Adaptive Ski Club at Big White
(348 volunteer ski days for the 11/12 ski season)

Powderhounds is a program offering unique skiing and recreation opportunities for physically and sensory challenged individuals. Founded in 1996, we operate from our facilities at the Big White Mountain Resort as a program of The Kelowna & District Society People in Motion a non-profit agency.

Our Mission: The Kelowna & District Society for People in Motion is dedicated to the inclusion and equality of children and adults with disabilities throughout the city of Kelowna, the Okanagan Valley and visitors from around the world. People in Motion promotes its mission of inclusion by developing and sponsoring programs, services, and advocacy efforts on behalf of, and with, people with disabilities.

The PowderHounds provide integrated recreational opportunities for people with disabilities that foster independence through the acquisition of lifetime skills.

We serve people with disabilities with instructional programs in adaptive Alpine skiing, which include downhill Sit-Ski, Mono-Ski and Bi-Ski as well as 3-track and 4-track instruction. Seventy- five percent of our member clients come from the Okanagan Valley. We have experienced a modest, but continuous, growth over the past 10 years. Powderhounds started with just a handful of skiers with a disability and 3 volunteer instructors. A scholarship fund is being instituted so we can accommodate participants from all income levels. The participants who partake in Powderhounds have special needs that cannot be met by traditional teaching methods. The students not only enjoy all the wondrous thrills of skiing, but also feel the pride and satisfaction of accomplishment. They also acquire an alliance with fellow athletes and volunteers, enhancing their lives physically and emotionally.

Powderhound volunteers are the critical to our organization. They are college students, parents, and citizens from the community. They train, teach, and volunteer their time to improve their skill in physical and therapeutic recreation, special education, and most important, to be a part of this valuable experience. Some volunteers have disabilities or children with disabilities, but most of our volunteers say they participate because they want to share their skills and love of the sport. As volunteers our primary objective is to provide adaptive winter sports training to the people with disabilities in a safe and fun environment where learning can take place.

Powderhounds offers complete instructor training for our volunteers. Volunteers receive extensive training in working with various disabilities, ski teaching methods, adaptive techniques, operation of equipment, and safety guidelines. The instructors are trained to recognize problem situations and conditions that may be created by medications and disabilities. This vital education not only assures a safe skiing experience, but also an enjoyable one. On going training throughout the season is offered to maximize the instructor's personal skiing, teaching ability, and technical knowledge.

Powderhounds is volunteer member based and receives no regular funding from outside sources.

Neither the board of directors nor our volunteers are paid and Powderhounds is a program of The Kelowna & District Society of People in Motion. Big White Mountain Resort generously donated space for our physical facilities, and use of the lift services. The resort management is fully supportive and cooperative with Powderhounds as an independent program.

PowderHounds has an active steering committee that meet year round to support the program with strategy, planning, and program management. Committee members have been involved with people with disabilities in the community for years. The Committee members come from a wide variety of professions, providing a valuable combination of talent and enthusiasm.
